Maganda, medyo masakit lang sa bangs.

The movie had me at tinusok-the-salagubang-by-a-compass. O creepy at surreal lang ang imagery so let’s keep it in?

Mah!

Jason!”. Sabi ko sa sarili ko, “Bongga! May faney ang writer ng movie! Tinitilian!”

“Jameson! Jameson!” pala ang itinitili ng mga poknat. Sorry, bingi lang.

So apparently may emerging but very vocal na fanbase si Jameson in the house. Kaso hindi yata nila nakuha ang memo na this is not a faney-targeting kilig movie. Dark, twisted homoerotically charged coming-of-age film siya. In other words hindi siya Regal Films. Kaya when the story started turning dark, natameme na ang mga faney, bwahaha.

it is a credit to the storytelling na maski hindi ito yung inaasahang movie ng mga faney present, napatahimik nito ang crowd and aside from some nervous tithering rapt ang attention ng audience saseveral deliberately uncomfortable scenes.

Actually maski ako na-fake. Given how the title was written, and the youth of the director, i was expecting a flashy angst-ridden millenial youth soap opera . 24 years old lang yata si direk at sorry, anlakas maka-millenial ng pangalang Petersen. #judgemental. Sorry naman.

What i got instead was a total mind-fuck, which actually shouldnt have been a surprise dahil it was written by Jason Paul Laxamana. He is one sick puppy. Ano ba meron sa tubig nila sa Pampanga? Charot.

Isang major lesson. Anlakas nilang makachaka.

Thankfully, in terms of acting hindi nagpasapaw si Khalil sa dalawang tisoy who didnt rest on pretty either. Sa mga eksena with high homoerotic tension, nobody backed down. Antapang nung tatlo to take on these roles na hindi pang matinee idol ang trajectory. For anyone aspiring na tilian ng kinikilig na masa for a career, this movie is a major risk. And the three were more than up for it.

The movie itself took risks. The director took his time putting the movie through its paces. Dark ang subject matter. May same sex tension. Hindi black and white ang characters so hindi malinaw whom to root for or root against. Yung bad boy na mukhang user could turn out to be the most pure, yung good boy naman could have a cruel streak and is not above taking advantage of his position when he can, and the villanous boy could turn out to be anothe victim in the end. As i said, mindfuck siya.

Beyond that, andaming layers na pinakita ang movie: from fond retro throwback to the 90’s, to the cost of the Pinatubo eruption to the psyche of those who lived through it, the fickleness of society, the wilyness of the youth who are not above gender-blindly using their sexuality on anyone to get what they want.

Though nakaramdam ako ng shades of Heavenly Creatures ni Peter Jackson sa theme ng pelikula, that is not a bad thing. The creatives and the cast managed to make it their own pa rin naman with nuaced touches at commentary sa millieu ng pelikula. Medyo nathrow-backan lang ako na it’s another LGBTQ movie with an obligatory sad ending na very 90’s rin. But i guess it goes lang with the subject matter.

Off naman kung biglang sumaya sa at magkaroon ng beachfront song and dance prod number na may freezeframe jumpshot sa ending.
