The initial plan was back-to-back viewing ng #sundaybeautyqueen at #savingsally sa Uptown Mall. But that plan fell through kasi nga hindi pinayagan so jowa maghalfday ng amo plus wititit raw pwedeng gamitin ang #MMFF2016 compli pass sa Saving Sally dahil nasa VIP cinema siya and it would cost P500 peysoses to see it there.

Hmmm. P500 versus P5 kung lilipat ako ng sine? Obvious ba?

So habang rumurolyo ang credits ng SBQ at nakapagpunas na ng luha, run for your life ako sa Market!Market! to meet up with G and catch Saving Sally LFS there. Haggard lang coz I only had minutes to spare tapos may mga pabebe pang mga merlat at the front of the line holding up the singular queue sa ticket booth, with inquiries keme na hindi naman nakatulong na gumanda sila. Hmpf! Dalian niyo kaya?!!!

And even in that haggard state of mind, na-enjoy ko ang Saving Sally.

For Saving Sally, Director Avid Liongoren managed to create a wondrous world, populated with awkward geeks and bullies, gizmos that zap around and gadgets that wash dishes and do the laundry,  and  of course your regular everyday monsters-on-the-street. Amazingly and he made us easily believe na this is the world that Marty and Sally, played by Enzo Marcos and Rhian Ramos, inhabits.  Painlessly, naka-enter ako agad ako sa mundo nilang puno ng detalye na kakailanganin yata ng several viewings at IMAX screen to be fully appreciated. Ganun siya kapulido.

Although ipinagbabando sa lahat that it took more than 10 years to bring Saving Sally to mainstream cinema screens, it would be a disservice to think na kaya maayos yung movie ay dahil nga 10 years ito inabot. Give a mediocre director the same 10 years at mediocre pa rin ang ilalabas niyang produkto. Give him a hundred years and… well patay na siya nun.

But then again, i dont think the driving force of the movie was really  ever about the story or the dialogue.

The magic is in solidity of the director’s vision and the childlike clarity of what story  it wanted to tell. Although nagpahaging naman yung kwento sa tema ng child abuse, sexual predation, and premarital sex at yung ngang villain na korteng burat, it still managed to hold on to its innocence.

Supposedly Marty lives in QC raw while Sally resides in East LA, East Lower Antipolo.

Performance wise, the supports were solid. Si Shamaine Buencamino, tumayo lang in her costume, wa na need ng spluk, aura lang niya forbidding na. And how cool is it na si Kuya Bodjie ang tatay mo?  Plus the guy who played the publisher just ate up the scenery with his clear and crisp delivery.

Agreed, Saving Sally is far from a perfect film, pero ayokong negahin nang bongga kasi kakalorki yung effort at bongga naman yung produkto. May kulang here and there, pero bongga na. Medyo long in the tooth na nga lang si TJ Trinidad as Sally’s (way) older BF. Rhian is a perfectly cast as the walking wounded yet fiesty Sally. Andaming dimensions ang ibingay niya. I love the way she was posed yung sa eksena na nakahiga sila sa grass under the tree, anime na anime ang dating niya.

While Rhian was running away with here interpretation of Sally, Enzo’s Marty was stoic and too in his head. Sige, kanya-kanyang interpretation nga yan, pero there’s nerdy, introverted and cerebral, and there is borderline catatonic. Charot. Ok, OA description, pero you get what i mean., visual ang pelikula at hindi mindreaders ang manonood. Show, don’t tell.

Let me be clear, whatever negative i can say about Saving Sally is simply splitting hair and only because of the greater potential height i could see  it reach. Rhian will still be Sally though,  saka si Kuya Bodjie IS Kuya Bodjie.  Cate Blanchett could sub for  Shamaine. And Antonio Banderas will be Zorro. Ganun ang casting. Basta.
