One request down! Ayan @logan una ka for the year.

#singmovie is my first new movie of the year though not the first one i saw in 2017.

Sing is set in a world populated by anthropor… andropormi… anglofor ah basta yung mga animals ang tao tapos nagsasalita sila, ganun. Anyways may down and out na theater produ na may brilliant idea to revitalize his business. He decided to put up a singing contest that will make big stars out of regular people.

Wow! How thrilling! How new. How innovative. How very American Idol na tumakbo for 15 seasons sa US at nacancel last year dahil waley na ratings. But that’s me being nega. Isa lang yan sa mga rason kung bakit nahirapan ako to get into this animated movie.

The kwento seems to be set somewhere na Hollywoodish na may rolling hills. San Franollywood? Anyways the central character, the theater produ, ay isang Koala, so either nasa Australia pala or immigrant stock si produ? Ewan. Produ is voice by Matthew McConaughey, definitely not Autralian. Ok, so blind casting itu? Moving on…

One of the main characters is Rosita, a mundrakels na  pig with sanrekwang piglets to care for, voiced by Reese Witherspoon. Tekatekateka. Rosita ang name, so one would assume na,  at the very least, latina siya. Pero voiced by Reese who is as far from being latina as one can get de ba? And the latina pig ay di magkandaugaga sa dami ng anakis? OMG White washing na  racial profiling pa!!!!  Discrimination!!! Discrimination!!!

Cheret lang.

There’s also the smooth-voice gorilla name Johnny na anak ng leader ng mga magnanakaw na may Irish accent. Again, why? Gay under-representation!!! Discrimination! Discrimination!!!

Ganung kasimple. Simple daw o!

It’s when i kicked my hyper-critical brain under my seat that i started enjoying the movie. Impressive naman talaga yung details ng pagka-animate ng characters down to the hair follicles. Engaging ang voice-acting ng mga bida and the way they were styled. Si Meena’ng shy na elepante na nagtatago sa likod ng tenga niya, nakakagwapo yung hair style ni Johnny gorilla. yung mommy pants ni Rosita the pig na may talent pala for mechanical invention and engineering so bakit uhmm… back sa ilalim ng upuan hypercritical brain! Back!!! Back i say!!!

Mix blessing for me na puno ng old and new pop hits yung movie.  Either alam ng mga bata dahil naririnig nila sa radio now, or familiar siya dahil naririnig nila sa mga nanay nila. The songs were so hummable, parang sa selection booklet ng videoke sila namili ng kanta o pinoy ang musical consultant nila.

Pero personally, I prefer my musicals to have original songs dahil theater queen ako, but then even sa Broadway uso na yung musicals based sa playlist of an era or one particular artist or group, so what do i know.

Overwhelming ang dami ng kantang ginamit.Parang namalengke sila ng songs tapos isinaksak lahat sa loob ng movie na wala lang,  samantalang ang That Thing Called Tadhana nag-crowdsource pa ng fund (sowsyal way of saying namalimos)   para lang mabayaran ang right to one song ni Whitney Houston. Asan ang katarungan?!!!! Cheret.

Ikaw ba yan, hypercritical brain? Balik sa ilalim ng chair! Dali!

Anyways, at some point i found myself caring for the characters na pala. That surprised me kasi nga may initial resistance ako.

So anak ng tupa. Paking sheep.

Highlight talaga ng movie is the extended finale where the characters all got to perform at natahi yung emotional closure ng mga kwento nila. Bongga. Favorite ko yung kumakanta ng My Way yung daga habang nililipad ng hangin. Nagkaroon ng hugot, bwahahah. Tanginernz.

At this point, you want all the characters to succeed at maluluha ka in the various ways that they do. I’m not ashamed of this, nagclapey-clapey kami ng sisteret ko kasabay ng mga bagets na malamang  may diapers pa sa ilalim ng shorts nila. Magkakalevel lang kami.

Sing is a great equalizer.
