#ChangingPartners : #CinemaOneOriginals2017 #TheKneeJerkCritic Movie Review

Pumasok ako sa sinehan without prior knowledge about Changing Partners aside from it being a musical. Ok.

Cut to Jojit Lorenzo naman in a different house.

Ahihihi.

Sorry, natu-throwback ano sa Anna Liza at Flordeluna sa name niya.

Anyways, ikinanta rin ni Jojit ang feelings niya because it is that kind of movie.

Flashback? Bisexual ba si Agot? At yung jowa niyan gel, di ba yun yung jowa rin ni Jojit kanina? Anyareh?

Sumakit ang bangs ko.

It took me a while habang tumatakbo ang movie to realize na ahhh, parellel kembers ito.

Sayang. Now i wish i had.

Sila-sila nag tataluhan. One month itong dalawa ang magjowa, the next month, iba na ang jowa nung isa pero within the same barkada.

Anghaharot ng mga pohtah.

Anyways…

Sa kwento, Alex, is the more senior sa isang relasyon na medyo shaky na. Alex is played by Agot and by Jojit bilang straight woman, straight guy, tibam at joding. Stay with me here.

Oo Agot and Jojit are both si Alex. Hindi magkakapangalan lang ang charaters nila. Iisang charater ang pinuportray nila. Ganun

May jowabels si Alex na jogets, si Cris, played by Sandino Martin as well as by Ana Luna. Same as Agot and Jojit, Sandino and Ana play the same charater rin.

Ang issue ni Alex, nararamdaman niya yung bigat ng societal judgement of having a much younger jowa. Hello bantay-bata. Adding to that is the burden of providing for an immature partner who seems to be content to be taken care of.

Si Cris naman similarly feels na jinajudge siya ng society for having a much older partner. Within the relationship naman he/she also feels the imbalance of power due to Alex controlling the purse string and longs for some sort of independence.

Something’s gotta give.

Enter the spectre of Angel.

But the more hininigpitan niya si Cris, the more namang Alex is driving a wedge sa relationship nila at mas itinutulak si Cris towards Angel.

In short napapraning ang matanda habang kinakati ang bata.

Taas ang kamay ng nakakarelate.

Performance-wise,  bungga ang buong cast. Jojit and Agot were ajudged best actor and best actress sa festival and deservingly so. Both managed to deliver TWO nuanced performances sa movie playing the same character.

Beyond the visual cue ng wa-bangs/have-ng-bangs, Agot managed to differentiate yung dalawang version ng Alex niya, isang strong older woman at isang slightly butch na tungs. Si Jojit rin twofold ang acting. Yung hetero niya simmering with rage pero moviestealer yung beki Alex niya na flaming without being flamboyant. Breaking up has never been so quotable.

She likewise managed to deliver two Crises, isang mas bargas while the other ay pampered millennial.

Dito ako medyo nakulangan kay Sandino kasi in both versions parehong pajunjun ang charaterization niya His performance was far from bad, sobrang effective siya na kinikilig ako sa eksena niya.

Char.

For me, though less than idyllic, the end was earned.

Anu na Vincent de Jesus, make this happen.

Visually, Papa Dan Villegas didn’t disappoint. Hindi ko napanood yung stage original so i can’t compare, pero feeling ko naachieve naman niyang maitranslate yung stage musical into film. Naachieve rin seamlessly yung pagtalon-talon from one storyline to another. In fact hindi lang natahi, nabraid niya nang bongga yung parallel stories into one cohesive kwento at komento: Mababae sa lalaki, o beki sa beki o tungs sa tungs, love is love and pain is pain. All relationships are equal.
