THE KNEEJERK CRITIC MOVIE REVIEW: Split

Split is tagged as a horror/thriller. Gaano ka-thrilling?

TKJC OST (OnSikandTot): Sakaling Di Makarating

Onsikadtot, #sakalinghindimakarating turned out to be a nice ride. The first time i saw Sakaling Hindi Makarating kasi was at the #cinema76 sa Manda. Late kami nakarating so sa gilid-gilid lang kami naupo, on gasp! Monobloc chair! And i was definitely on critic mode and may i say, anlakas maka-harsh ng monobloc chairs. I guess "Sakali..." just needs the right frame of mind to be enjoyed. So when you go out on Feb 1 to catch "Sakali..." choose a comfy cinema and check in the inner bitch critic at the door. THE KNEEJERK CRITIC MOVIE REVIEW: Ilawod

Nabother ako sa portrayal ng sexuality ng ng mga bagets dito... but bothered in a positive way. Typically kasi, pag ang artista mo eh nasa mid teens, puro kasweetan o pagka-angstsy ang portrayal. O kaya pagka-brat. Hanggang doon lang, tapos bigla, buntis. Dito overt ang sexuality na pina-ooze kay Teri Malvar at kita mo na intention yun ng director, to may you squirm and feel uncomfortable. Hindi ito basta kirititay-katuray. Hindi ito variation ng landitay-lanturay-harot. This is lust that goes beyond sexual. Eto yung Dan Villegas na hinahanap ko.

THE KNEEJERK CRITIC RETRO REVIEW: Himala, 1982 (Restored)

Parang mahirap i-classify ang Himala with today's standards. It is a masterpiece created by its time, yet whose questions and message remains current. Yung motif ng unblinking eye of the media sa Himala, aba that's reality TV at its best and worse. Yung sumisinghap na ng last breath si Elsa, kinukunan pa ng video, aba palitan lang ng iphone yung mga camera eh it's so 2017. Iba ka Ishma! Iba ka Ricky Lee! Ate Guy! Para siyang perfect storm when a great material is performed by a great actor under the guidance of a great director. Greatness galore! Kaya naman pala classic at iconic.

THE KNEEJERK CRITIC MOVIE REVIEW: Passengers

Jennifer Lawrence at Chris Pratt! Hungganda siguro nilang panoorin sa big screen together. Ayoko nang magadditional spoiler pa. Suffice it to say na ang moral of the lesson ay, tama nga ang kasabihan na magbiro ka na sa lasing, wag lang sa sobrang agang ginising, lalo na kung 89 years too early. Ganun.

THE KNEEJERK CRITIC MOVIE REVIEW: Sing

Personally, I prefer my musicals to have original songs dahil theater queen ako, but then even sa Broadway uso na yung musicals based sa playlist of an era or one particular artist or group so what do i know. Overwhelming ang dami ng kantang ginamit.Parang namalengke sila ng songs tapos isinaksak lahat sa loob ng movie na parang wala lang, samantalang ang That Thing Called Tadhana nag-crowdsoruce pa (sowsyal way of saying namalimos) para lang mabayaran ang right to one song ni Whitney Houston. Asan ang katarungan?!!!! Cheret.

Kneejerk Look Back at the MMFF2016

The origin of this post is my newly-minted at recently-claimed ninong, Joel David idea. Gawa raw ako ng omnibus MMFF2016 post where you guys can find all the reviews, so here it is. 🙂

THE KNEEJERK CRITIC MMFF2016: Die Beautiful

Die Beautiful tells the nonlinear story of a transgender beauconera, from her days as budding badinglet named Patrick with her beshfrend Barb, it followed her through her various struggles in life on the way to finding herself, up to her rise, eventual death and fabulous wake as the beauty queen... Trisha Echeverria!!!

THE KNEEJERK CRITIC MMFF2016 REVIEW: Seklusyon

THE KNEEJERK CRITIC MMFF2016 REVIEW: Kabisera

Maganda naman may gustong sabihin yung movie tungkol sa societal ills sa macro and how it affects the pinoy family sa micro level. Pero hindi natahi nang seamless at ang lumabas ay hodgepodge of issues na na graze lang ang surface at acting moments that may or may not been deserved.

THE KNEEJERK CRITIC MMFF2016 REVIEW: Vince&Kath&James

Narinig niyo yon?!!! The youth! Kebs sila. Basta barkabarkada silang nanood, isang halera per barkada. Anlakas maka-tanders.

THE KNEEJERK CRITIC MMFF2016 REVIEW: Oro

Righteaous anger meyn, righteous anger! Parang Jesus na nangwarla at the temple lang. Oro may have lost La Aunor due some differences pero it gained something else with Adlawan. If Ate Guy have stayed sa movie and did what the script asked, it would have been another Aunor moment, nothing more. But with Irma, Oro became an ensemble piece, walang bida, tulong-tulong lahat to present a believable slice of life...however bitter it may be.
